This took place in the summer of 2004! Fort Mill, SC - Fountain Valley, CA
Day 0/1?!
My first trip across country is really what made me see how much I love the road! I took I-40 pretty much all the way. After spending my senior year in South Carolina, my best friend at the time, Bryan, flew out to drive out with me. The day we were supposed to leave we had decided to stop in and get an oil change at walmart. After about an hour and a half, I heard my name over the intercom only to tell me that they screwed up and dropped the washer into the oil pan and if you know anything about cars you know that you have to replace the pan, which is a lot of money, annnnd time. So we had to postpone our trip another day, which by the way was super stressful cuz we were both so pumped to leave.
Day 1/2
Finally when we did pick up the car it was already later in the day again, but nothing was going to keep us from leaving.. we made it just past Asheville, NC, entered into Tennessee and stopped and stayed at a motel right next to a huddle house that we conveniently had breakfast at the following morning.
Day 2/3
I'm not sure what time we got on the road the next day but it was eearrrrrlyyy and the fun just got goin. We drove into Nashville walked around their main street downtown, went into cowboy stores, tried on vests, boots, and hats... unfortunately all the pictures turned out too dark in that store because we were idiots and didn't use the flash. After getting lost trying to get back to the interstate and wasting a lot of gas we got on the road for a bit and stopped at some giant gift shop/ gas station and bought a bag of fireworks, for no apparent reason. After hoping back on the road we made one more Tennessee stop in Memphis and check out the King's place (Graceland)... which was freakin awesome by the way! Little did we know that was the last truly awesome thing to stop and see for a while because I'm not sure we saw anything in Arkansas except a lot of fields with fences and powerlines all at angles from crazy winds being blown through. Oklahoma was a lot of the same, however, we did get to see a huge Adult Factory if you know what I'm saying, and a huuuuuuuugeeee Cross on the side of the road which was awkward because they weren't far from each other and I'm not exactly where we stayed that night.
Day 3/4
We saw tons of signs for free 72oz steaks the next day in Amarillo, TX and went to check it out, I had my mind set that I could do it, but then I saw it was $99 if you didn't finish it, so I backed out cuz in the event that I couldn't finish it, I didn't have the money to pay for that.. ssoooooo we went across the street to this mom and pop restaurant, which reminded me of a western movie where you walk into the saloon and everyone stops what they're doing, you can hear there chairs move as they turn to look at you... The hostess came up and said "what can i do for you boys" we said "we'd like to eat?!"... after being seated everyone pretty much creeped us out and stared at us the entire time we were there. We left in a hurry and didn't say a word to each other until we left... after we ate of course....! We stopped in Albuquerque, NM that night and all I really remember about that place was it was hot even at night and super super windy!
Day 4/5
The fourth/fifth and final day of our journey home was really cool we drove through the desert, went to this indian-style sweat shop where I bought a dead tarantula in a paperweight, and Bryan bought a belt buckle made out of rattle snake skin (with half the head and fangs sticking out of it). We then drove through a huge storm which soaked the straps on the top of my car that held the surf board on top of the car, and eventually ran down the straps and into the car giving us a nice shower inside the car ..haha we had to move everything to the back so it wouldn't get wet. Bryan and I jumped out of the car due to the biggest cockroach i've ever seen crawling around on his side of the car in the parking lot of where the meteor hit in Flagstaff, AZ... we never found the thing we just decided to get back in the car and made the trek through the mountains and on home. . . . . . (Little did I know two years later I'd make that trip again in reverse taking I-10 alllll allonnne well just me and my cat!... still super fun!)
